Ghosts of the Anglo-Scottish border, written by a man who had spent his life collecting its ballads: reivers who ride after death, a piper, a drowned man at a ford, the grey figure that walks a peel tower. Pease trained as a barrister in Northumberland and gave it up for the Border’s history; his stories keep the ballads’ flat tone, which is what makes them work. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Friedrich and Martin among them.
Certain places, said Stevenson, cry out for a story, and Scott, in any new surroundings, straightway invented an appropriate tale, if there were not already a story or tradition in existence.
