Ghost stories from Chicago: a lakeside cottage, a tenement, a hospital corridor, a woman who is followed by something with no shape. Peattie became a reporter at the Chicago Tribune in the 1880s, when women were not, and ran its literary page for a decade; these 1898 stories put the supernatural into a modern American city rather than an English abbey, which almost nobody was doing. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Q100605775, Q103951954 and Guetal among them.
