L'Abbé Constantin

by Ludovic Halévy 1834–1908

The book, and the century it came out of.

An old country curé loses his patrons when the château is sold to Americans, and prepares to hate them — then meets the two young women who have bought it. Halévy wrote the words the nineteenth century sang: with Meilhac he made the libretti for Offenbach and for Carmen. This 1882 novel was the gentlest thing he did, sold enormously, and got him into the Académie. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Millet, Rousseau and Corot among them.

Ludovic Halevy was born in Paris, January 1, 1834.

A note on this edition

L'Abbé Constantin, by Ludovic Halévy, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
