White Nights and Other Stories

by Fyodor Dostoevsky 1821–1881

The book, and the century it came out of.

A lonely man walks Petersburg at night, meets a woman on a canal bridge, and is granted four white nights of company before the terms become clear. Dostoevsky’s early stories work at the scale he would later abandon — a room, a street, one voice explaining itself — and the sentimental dreamer of these pages is the ancestor of every character he wrote afterwards.

It was a wonderful night, such a night as is only possible when we are young, dear reader.

A note on this edition

White Nights and Other Stories, by Fyodor Dostoevsky, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
