A Breton fairy, exiled from her people for a piece of mischief, is found on a hillside by two English airmen and taken back to a village in Sussex — where she sets about improving people, with results. Jerome was orphaned at fifteen and worked as a railway clerk and an actor before Three Men in a Boat; this 1916 book was written in the middle of the war, by a man who had just driven ambulances in France at fifty-six. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Millet, Jeanne-Julien and Bonheur among them.
