Man and Wife

by Wilkie Collins 1824–1889

The book, and the century it came out of.

A woman is married, in Scottish law, by a form of words she did not know were binding — and the man who spoke them is a brutal athlete who wants her only because she is now his property. Collins wrote this in 1870 against the marriage laws and against the cult of muscular sport, and both establishments howled; the Scottish irregular marriage was real law, and so was the fact that she had no remedy. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Whistler, Edmonds and Waldmüller among them.

ON a summer’s morning, between thirty and forty years ago, two girls were crying bitterly in the cabin of an East Indian passenger ship, bound outward, from Gravesend to Bombay.

A note on this edition

Man and Wife, by Wilkie Collins, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
