Stories about the kingdoms people build for themselves: an office, a marriage, a convent, a newspaper. Jordan reported the Lizzie Borden trial as a young newspaperwoman, edited Harper’s Bazar for years, and as a reader at Harper & Brothers accepted a manuscript by an unknown named Sinclair Lewis. Her working women were drawn from the ones she employed and was. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Millais, De Nittis and Corot among them.
