A sequel written by another hand entirely: Monte Cristo’s daughter grown, the old scores of the Count’s revenge still bleeding, and Paris and Rome still full of people who remember. Flagg was an American consul in Venice and a working journalist, and this is the strangest kind of literary artefact — the Victorian appetite for more of a story, satisfied by the wrong author. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by d’Unker, Biard and Robert among them.
The Count of Monte-Cristo was in Rome. He had hired one of the numerous private palaces, the Palazzo Costi, situated on a broad thoroughfare near the point where the Ponte St. Angelo connects Rome proper with that transtiberine suburb known as the Leonine City or Trastavere.
