One Basket

by Edna Ferber 1885–1968

The book, and the century it came out of.

Ferber’s short stories, chosen by herself: a manicurist, a traveling saleswoman, a Jewish mother in Chicago, a girl who will not marry the man everyone has picked. She was a reporter at seventeen and won the Pulitzer for So Big; Show Boat, Cimarron and Giant all began as her novels. These are the pieces she wanted kept, and the working women in them were her real subject all along. Illustrated with 54 full-page plates — paintings by Zandomeneghi, Gilbert and Manet among them.

Before she tried to be a good woman she had been a very bad woman—so bad that she could trail her wonderful apparel up and down Main Street, from the Elm Tree Bakery to the railroad tracks, without once having a man doff his hat to her or a woman bow.

A note on this edition

One Basket, by Edna Ferber, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
