Other Things Being Equal

by Emma Wolf 1865–1932

The book, and the century it came out of.

A San Francisco Jewish family, a daughter who falls in love with a gentile doctor, and a father who will not have it — argued out on both sides with respect and no melodrama. Wolf was born in San Francisco to French Jewish immigrants, wrote with one arm paralysed from birth, and rarely left the city; this 1892 novel was the first serious American treatment of intermarriage, and it is still the fairest. Illustrated with 51 full-page plates — paintings by Munch, Hau and Béroud among them.

A humming-bird dipped through the air and lit upon the palm-tree just below the open window; the long drowsy call of a crowing cock came from afar off; the sun spun down in the subdued splendor of a hazy veil.

A note on this edition

Other Things Being Equal, by Emma Wolf, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
