Lubbock was James’s friend and edited his letters after his death; this 1921 book built a whole critical vocabulary that everyone used for forty years and Forster spent the rest of his life arguing with. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Vermeer, Borch and Drost among them.
