The Grand Babylon Hôtel

by Arnold Bennett 1867–1931

The book, and the century it came out of.

An American millionaire tries to buy a steak and a bottle of beer in London’s grandest hotel, is refused, and buys the hotel instead — after which the staff begin to disappear. Bennett wrote it as a serial in the year the century turned, for money, at speed, and produced the ancestor of every glamorous hotel thriller since. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Birger, Vuillard and Norrman among them.

Jules, the celebrated head waiter of the Grand Babylon, was bending formally toward the alert, middle-aged man who had just entered the smoking-room and dropped into a basket-chair in the corner by the conservatory.

A note on this edition

The Grand Babylon Hôtel, by Arnold Bennett, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
