A boy grows up in a New Hampshire valley beneath a cliff whose crags form a vast human face, and waits for the great man the prophecy says will one day resemble it. Hawthorne’s White Mountain tales gather the New England he could not leave alone — the Great Carbuncle, the Ambitious Guest and the family that dies in a landslide. The face itself collapsed in 2003. Illustrated with 58 full-page plates — paintings by Allston, Friedrich and Dahl among them.
