Stratton-Porter waded into the Limberlost swamp with a heavy plate camera to photograph birds and wrote fiction to fund it; the botany here is a working herbalist’s, not a novelist’s, and the book sold in the millions. Illustrated with 50 full-page plates — paintings by Durand, Johnson and Hammer among them.
