The House of Pride, and Other Tales of Hawaii

by Jack London 1876–1916

The book, and the century it came out of.

Hawaii not as advertised: the missionary family that owns the island and cannot say so, a leper colony at Molokai, a sheriff, a surfer, a Chinese storekeeper. London went to Hawaii in 1907 and again in 1915, and the title story so offended the descendants of the missionary families that the local papers denounced him. He wrote what he saw, including the leprosy, which he refused to make either heroic or disgusting. Illustrated with 51 full-page plates — paintings by Musin, Aagaard and Moore among them.

A note on this edition

The House of Pride, and Other Tales of Hawaii, by Jack London, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
