She sets out to find the evidence that will settle it, against his wishes and against the law’s. Paintings of Victorian courtrooms and country libraries run through this Gilded Library volume; a rolled brief, a magnifying glass and a wedding ring carry the decoration. Illustrated with 52 full-page plates — paintings by Degas, Manet and Simonsen among them.
