Barr lost her husband and three sons to yellow fever in Texas in a single epidemic, went to New York a widow with three daughters and no money, and wrote some eighty novels to keep them. She knew what a woman without means was worth in either country. Illustrated with 36 full-page plates — paintings by Logsdail, Grandjean and Signac among them.
