The Long Vacation

by Charlotte M. Yonge 1823–1901

The book, and the century it came out of.

The May family grown up: a summer holiday at the seaside, an actress with a past, a stepson nobody knows what to do with, and a parish that must be kept going. Yonge lived her whole life in one Hampshire village, taught Sunday school there for seventy-one years, and gave the profits of her bestselling novel to fit out a missionary schooner. She wrote the middle-class family as a moral institution, and knew it from the inside. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Mander, Creswick and Leader among them.

A note on this edition

The Long Vacation, by Charlotte M. Yonge, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
