Stories about American men making fools of themselves gallantly: a millionaire’s son who joins the Red Cross to be near a nurse, a reporter, a soldier of fortune. Davis was the most famous American reporter of his age, covered six wars, and was the model Charles Dana Gibson drew for the Gibson Man; he wrote the chivalric American as he wished him to be, and knew perfectly well what he was doing. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Lelong, Woltze and Pla among them.
He was almost too good to be true. In addition, the gods loved him, and so he had to die young.
