A deposed king of a Mediterranean kingdom is running a restoration out of a villa in Tangier — selling shares in it to anyone who will buy, including a woman who loves him and a man who is keeping the accounts. Davis was the most famous reporter of his age and the model for the Gibson Man; this 1898 novella is his hardest look at professional patriots, and the jackal of the title is not the king. Illustrated with 58 full-page plates — paintings by Jacobsen, Aivazovsky and Boudin among them.
The private terrace of the Hotel Grand Bretagne, at Tangier, was shaded by a great awning of red and green and yellow, and strewn with colored mats, and plants in pots, and wicker chairs.
