Liljencrantz was a Chicago writer of Swedish descent who spent her short career on the sagas; she worked from the Norse texts rather than from the Victorian idea of vikings, and the Greenland politics — Christian against heathen in Eric’s own hall — are taken from the record. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Johnssen, Barth and Larson among them.
