Seven stories about art and the people it ruins: a Nebraska boy who sees a Rodin and cannot go home, a sculptor’s body brought back to the prairie town that produced him, a schoolteacher taken to a matinée at Carnegie Hall and destroyed by it. Cather moved to Nebraska at nine and spent her career on the collision between that country and the thing she wanted; this was her first book of fiction. Illustrated with 57 full-page plates — paintings by Charlemont, Tanner and Schultzberg among them.
