Winesburg, Ohio

A Group of Tales of Ohio Small Town Life

by Sherwood Anderson 1876–1941

The book, and the century it came out of.

Twenty-two lives in one Ohio town, seen through a young reporter who will leave and a doctor who never did: the unmarried teacher, the man with the beautiful hands, the woman who married the wrong brother. Anderson walked out of his own paint factory mid-sentence at thirty-six and never went back; he called these people grotesques — not monsters, but ordinary people bent by one truth held too long. It changed the American short story. Illustrated with 49 full-page plates — paintings by Hammershøi and Herwegen-Manini among them.

The writer, an old man with a white mustache, had some difficulty in getting into bed.

A note on this edition

Winesburg, Ohio, by Sherwood Anderson, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
