Kelland called himself the best second-rate writer in America and made a fortune proving it: sixty novels, decades of Saturday Evening Post serials, and Speak Easily and Mr Deeds out of his stories. The labour argument here is real. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Sloan, Lawson and Kaelin among them.
