James Oliver Curwood

James Oliver Curwood was expelled from school, sold his first story at sixteen, and was paid by the Canadian government to travel the far north and write about it — which he did, thirty-three books' worth, most filmed. A hunter who turned conservationist after a grizzly spared him, he built a Michigan castle to write in and died at forty-nine of an infected insect bite.
