The Flaming Forest

by James Oliver Curwood 1878–1927

The book, and the century it came out of.

A Mounted Policeman goes north after a killer and finds a woman who confesses to the murder herself, a river of burning forest, and a family that has been protecting somebody for years. Curwood was expelled from school, sold his first story at sixteen, and was paid by the Canadian government to travel the far north; he later renounced hunting altogether. The forest fire is the best thing in the book. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Rousseau, Munch and Mordt among them.

An hour ago, under the marvelous canopy of the blue northern sky, David Carrigan, Sergeant in His Most Excellent Majesty’s Royal Northwest Mounted Police, had hummed softly to himself, and had thanked God that he was alive.

A note on this edition

The Flaming Forest, by James Oliver Curwood, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
