The Honor of the Big Snows

by James Oliver Curwood 1878–1927

The book, and the century it came out of.

A missionary’s wife dies in the far north, a trapper raises the child alone in a cabin at the edge of the barren lands, and sixteen years later the girl has to be told who she is. Curwood was expelled from school, sold his first story at sixteen, and was paid by the Canadian government to travel the far north; this early novel is the one where his snow country stops being scenery. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Hill, Krieghoff and Rasmussen among them.

The words came in a gentle whisper from the woman’s lips.

A note on this edition

The Honor of the Big Snows, by James Oliver Curwood, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
