Green Mansions

A Romance of the Tropical Forest

by W. H. Hudson 1841–1922

The book, and the century it came out of.

In the forests of Venezuela a fugitive from a failed revolution hears a voice in the trees — a girl the Indians will not go near and mean to kill, who speaks a language nobody knows and moves through the canopy like something the forest made. Hudson was born on the Argentine pampas to American settlers, came to England at thirty-three and lived years in poverty; he was a naturalist first, and the forest here is real even when Rima is not. Illustrated with 47 full-page plates — paintings by North and Beynon among them.

I take up pen for this foreword with the fear of one who knows that he cannot do justice to his subject, and the trembling of one who would not, for a good deal, set down words unpleasing to the eye of him who wrote Green Mansions, The Purple Land, and all those other books which have meant so much to me.

A note on this edition

Green Mansions, by W. H. Hudson, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
