Yasmini as a girl: a princess of mixed blood in a Rajput state, an English commissioner, a hidden treasure, and a Brahmin priesthood that intends to have both. Mundy was born William Gribbon, spent his twenties in India and East Africa as an ivory poacher and confidence man, and was jailed for it before reinventing himself in America — which is precisely why his India smells of something other than the club.
