Mr Hogarth leaves his fortune to a nephew nobody knew existed, and his two nieces — raised as heiresses and educated like men — are left with nothing and must earn. One goes to Australia. Spence emigrated from Scotland to South Australia at fourteen and became the colony’s conscience: its first woman novelist, its first female political candidate, and the campaigner who gave the world proportional representation. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Thomson, Kingdom and Turner among them.
In a large and handsomely-furnished room of a somewhat old-fashioned house, situated in a rural district in the south of Scotland, was assembled, one day in the early summer of 185-, a small group in deep mourning.
