An Argentine landowner’s family is split by the war: two daughters married into France and Germany, cousins in opposing armies, and the old man’s fortune paying for both. Blasco Ibáñez was jailed some thirty times as a republican agitator in Valencia; this 1916 novel sold in millions, made Valentino a star, and gave the century the phrase it still uses for catastrophe. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Gierymski, Orłowski and Laermans among them.
They were to have met in the garden of the Chapelle Expiatoire at five o’clock in the afternoon, but Julio Desnoyers with the impatience of a lover who hopes to advance the moment of meeting by presenting himself before the appointed time, arrived an half hour earlier.
