The Killing Time in Galloway: Covenanters hiding in the moss-hags with a price on their heads, Claverhouse’s dragoons quartering the moors, and a boy of a great house who must choose which side of his own family to betray. Crockett was a Free Church minister who gave up the pulpit when his novels sold, and wrote some sixty books; he knew this ground and these graves personally, and the persecution here is not decorative. Illustrated with 59 full-page plates — paintings by van Heemskerck, van der Meulen and Berchem among them.
