A Hudson Bay factor’s son and a great sled dog cross Labrador in winter, chased by men who want the fur post’s secret. Marsh set his books among the dog teams, canoe routes and trading posts of the far north and wrote the cold as a working condition rather than an adventure — the dogs are characters, the ice is not scenery. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Gløersen, Levitan and Shishkin among them.
The solitudes of the East Coast had shaken off the grip of the long snows.
