A cargo steamer out of New York is wrecked in the South Atlantic, and the survivors — passengers, crew, and a young man travelling under a false name because he is accused of a theft he did not commit — build a society on an uncharted island. McCutcheon invented Graustark and with it the whole American vogue for imaginary-kingdom romance; here he does the same trick without the kingdom. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Jacobsen, Adam and Tissot among them.
