Wildfire
by Zane Grey 1872–1939
The book, and the century it came out of.
A wild stallion nobody can take, a horse-hunter who wants him, and the girl who gets to him first — in the canyon country of Utah, with a river and a fire coming. Grey was a dentist who abandoned the drill for the typewriter and invented the popular western with Riders of the Purple Sage; he rode this country himself, and the horse-running in this one is the best in his work. Illustrated with 46 full-page plates — paintings by de Almeida Júnior, Hill and Maris among them.
For some reason the desert scene before Lucy Bostil awoke varying emotions—a sweet gratitude for the fullness of her life there at the Ford, yet a haunting remorse that she could not be wholly content—a vague loneliness of soul—a thrill and a fear for the strangely calling future, glorious, unknown.
Wildfire, by Zane Grey, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.
It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.

Not a mock-up: this page is taken from the finished volume. The ornament above the chapter belongs to its shelf and to no other, the opening letter is set as a drop capital, and the plate below carries the name of the painter and the year.
Both photographed from the finished volume.
