A young man inherits a fashionable health resort — sulphur baths, diets, cranks and all — on condition that he run it for a year without telling anyone who he is. Rinehart trained as a nurse and took up fiction at twenty-seven when a stock crash ruined her family, and became the highest-paid writer in America; the sanatorium here is a farce machine, and she knew hospitals from the inside. Illustrated with 58 full-page plates — paintings by Giraud, Gryglewski and Hau among them.
When it was all over Mr. Sam came out to the spring-house to say good-by to me before he and Mrs. Sam left.
