A stranger falls from the Cathedral gallery in a quiet English close, and the dead man had come to Wrychester to look for something that a canon, a clockmaker and a solicitor would all rather he had not found. Fletcher was a Yorkshire journalist who wrote more than two hundred books, and this 1920 novel is the one that made him famous when Woodrow Wilson named him as a favourite. The cathedral politics are exactly observed. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Nowopacký, Millet and Chauvel among them.
American tourists, sure appreciators of all that is ancient and picturesque in England, invariably come to a halt, holding their breath in a sudden catch of wonder, as they pass through the half-ruinous gateway which admits to the Close[1] of Wrychester.
