The son of a Spanish nobleman is sent out with a sword, a mandolin and his father’s blessing to make his fortune in the wars, and acquires a servant, a magician, a castle in Shadow Valley and a wedding that must be arranged around the Inquisition. Dunsany invented his own pantheon in The Gods of PegДЃna and wrote much of his work with a quill; this 1922 romance is his funniest, and the Golden Age it parodies is one he half believed in. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Engalière, Daumier and Huet among them.
After long and patient research I am still unable to give to the reader of these Chronicles the exact date of the times that they tell of.
