Archie Moffam marries an American hotel magnate’s daughter, whom her father would rather she had not, and takes up residence in the hotel — where he cannot make a telephone call, buy a painting or open a window without a catastrophe. Wodehouse assembled this in 1921 from magazine stories and it is his New York book: the millionaire is drawn with real accuracy, and Archie’s uselessness is a fine art.
It wasn’t Archie’s fault really. Its true he went to America and fell in love with Lucille, the daughter of a millionaire hotel proprietor and if he did marry her—well, what else was there to do?
