Richmond was a Congregational minister’s daughter from upstate New York who wrote some thirty novels of domestic life; Red Pepper Burns was her one enduring character, and the operating scenes are done with a respect for the work that survives the romance around it. Illustrated with 53 full-page plates — paintings by van West, Spitzweg and Leys among them.
