Santa Catalina: a Spanish soldier, a chief’s daughter, and the legend of how the island’s butterflies came to be — a small California romance built on the stories the Gabrieleño told about their own coast. Herr was christened Charlotte Bronte Herr, which was either prophecy or a heavy load for a child; she wrote for children and for readers who wanted a legend done gracefully. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Trachel, Terrus and van Gogh among them.
It began to happen a long time ago, centuries ago, when, in a fragrant rush of rain, spring came one day to Punagwandah, fairest of the Channel Islands.
