Undertow
by Kathleen Thompson Norris 1880–1966
The book, and the century it came out of.
A young couple in New York start with nothing, and the book follows the money — the flat, the babies, the raise that does not come, the years in which she is always tired. Norris lost both parents at nineteen and worked as a bookkeeper and clerk to raise her younger siblings; she wrote domestic economics as fiction and became one of the highest-paid writers in America. The undertow is the ordinary one. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Martineau, Eakins and Mount among them.
We need no gifts, whose thoughts and prayers maintain Through all the years a strong and stronger chain, Yet take the little gift, the visible sign Of the deep love between your heart and mine.
Undertow, by Kathleen Thompson Norris, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.
It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.

A page from this edition
Not a mock-up: this page is taken from the finished volume. The ornament above the chapter belongs to its shelf and to no other, the opening letter is set as a drop capital, and the plate below carries the name of the painter and the year.
Both photographed from the finished volume.
