The Young Step-Mother

Or, A Chronicle of Mistakes

by Charlotte M. Yonge 1823–1901

The book, and the century it came out of.

A woman of twenty-four marries a widower with three grown-ish children and a house that has run itself badly for years, and gets almost everything wrong before she gets it right. Yonge lived her whole life in one Hampshire village, taught Sunday school there for seventy-one years, and gave the proceeds of her books to missionary ships — and wrote domestic mistakes better than anyone of her generation. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Berger-Désoras, Shiels and Q21985188 among them.

Fail—yet rejoice, because no less The failure that makes thy distress May teach another full success.

A note on this edition

The Young Step-Mother, by Charlotte M. Yonge, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
