The Silent Bullet

by Arthur B. Reeve 1880–1936

The book, and the century it came out of.

Craig Kennedy, professor of chemistry at Columbia, solves crimes with a lie detector, a seismograph, a spectroscope and a portable X-ray, and explains the apparatus as he goes. Reeve wrote eighty-two of these and was called the American Conan Doyle; half the instruments here did not yet exist in a police laboratory anywhere, and within twenty years most of them did. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Champin, Springer and Voddigel among them.

“It has always seemed strange to me that no one has ever endowed a professorship in criminal science in any of our large universities.”

A note on this edition

The Silent Bullet, by Arthur B. Reeve, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
